Arbutus Beach Graffiti 1001
Oil on Canvas
36 X 48"
$2700
This painting captures the collision of the West Coast wilderness and urban human imprint at South Surrey’s 1001 Steps.
By juxtaposing the peeling, paper-like bark of the native arbutus tree with the raw, vibrant layers of beach graffiti, the piece explores how nature and subculture reclaim the same shoreline. The arbutus naturally sheds its skin to grow, mirroring the way street artists continuously overwrite concrete walls with fresh tags. Ultimately, this artwork honours the unique grit of our local coast—where the ancient bluffs meet the temporary, shouting voices of young artists, creating a messy, beautiful dialogue between the organic and the human-made.

Dim 'N' Den Sum
Oil on canvas
24 X 48”
$1500
Dim 'N' Den Sum is an Asian fusion food truck located in Koloa, Kauai. Although it is well-known for its dim sum plates, fresh poke, and coconut shrimp, I found the food truck itself and the octopus chef (don’t eat them!) took the starring role.
Checkpoint Charlie
Oil on canvas
48 x 24 inches
$1500
On a trip to Germany with students, we visited the last standing sections of the Berlin Wall outdoor street art gallery. I was drawn to the tension between the hard, imposing geometry of the concrete and the spontaneous, organic language of graffiti. The colourful marks and layered imagery seem to push back against the rigid structure beneath them, transforming a symbol of restriction into one of creativity and freedom.
West Coast Sibyl - Libyan
Oil on canvas
20 X 16 inches
$500
This painting brings together two of my enduring artistic influences: the West Coast Arbutus tree and the Italian Renaissance. Inspired by the powerful, sculptural figures of Michelangelo’s Sibyls on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, I have reimagined the human form within the twisting structure of an Arbutus tree.
The muscular, contorted forms of Michelangelo’s figures have always fascinated me—their physical strength, movement and sense of tension. In this painting, the musculature of the human body becomes the musculature of the tree. The massive trunk, twisting branches and exposed roots echo the limbs, shoulders and torso of the Sibyl, creating an intentional ambiguity between human and tree.
The rich Renaissance palette of earthy ochres, warm reds, deep browns and muted greens is echoed in the natural colours of the Arbutus bark and foliage. Against the luminous blue of the West Coast water and sky, the tree becomes both a figure and a landscape.
The Arbutus, with its twisted limbs and weathered bark, becomes a kind of contemporary West Coast Sibyl—ancient, resilient and watchful. By merging Renaissance figure painting with the distinctive landscape of British Columbia, the work explores the connections between humanity and nature, history and place, the classical and the contemporary.
